Gifted Books Founder Lucy Chen Shares Transformational Journey: From CareerSetback to Leadership and Impact
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — April 6, 2025 — Gifted Books is delighted to highlight the inspiring journey of its founder, Lucy Chen, whose career-defining moment began not with success—but with failure.
In 2006, while working as a risk consultant at Wells Fargo, Chen delivered a presentation to senior leaders that she describes as a turning point in her life. “I failed,” Chen recalled. “I felt really embarrassed because I was the project leader.” That experience led her to a powerful realization: her technical expertise alone was not enough—she needed to develop her communication and leadership skills.
Through Wells Fargo, Chen was introduced to Toastmasters International, a global nonprofit dedicated to building confidence and public speaking abilities. What began as a response to a personal setback evolved into a lifelong commitment. Over the next 17 years, Chen immersed herself in the Toastmasters community, crediting the organization—and the environment fostered by Wells Fargo—for shaping her growth as a leader.
Chen went on to spend 16 years at Wells Fargo, building a strong foundation across Consumer Banking, Lending, and Corporate Risk. Her career combined expertise in technology, data analysis, and financial strategy, reflecting her academic background in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), including a master’s degree in environmental engineering from UCLA.
In 2020, amid the global pandemic, Chen made a pivotal transition—stepping into the startup world and expanding her involvement in community leadership. She joined a FinTech company in solar lending, became an advisory board member for the Catalyst Youth Network in Oakland, and helped launch the San Francisco chapter of Chief, a private network for women executives.
These experiences reinforced a calling Chen had long felt: to share stories that inspire and empower others.
In 2023, she published her first book, Build Resilience: Live, Learn, and Lead, drawing from her personal and professional journey. Today, Chen is a speaker, certified Human Potential coach, author, and entrepreneur. Through her organizations, Gifted Coaching and Gifted Books, she helps individuals develop leadership skills, amplify their voices, and bring their stories to life.
“Resilience is the key to success, because life is not static,” Chen said. “It always changes, and challenges are always incoming. It’s our ability to use empathy, critical thinking, and communication that makes us adaptable and powerful.”
Beyond her professional work, Chen remains deeply committed to community engagement and advocacy. Inspired by her upbringing as a first-generation immigrant, she actively supports initiatives such as local school district engagement programs and the Stop Asian Hate movement, emphasizing the importance of service, representation, and storytelling.
Looking ahead, Chen plans to continue writing and helping others share their stories—especially those from underrepresented communities.
“As I interact with people, I realize almost everyone has an amazing story,” she said. “If we don’t tell our stories, someone else will—and we risk losing authenticity.”
