ABOUT THE BOOK

English Translation

In an era of unprecedented resources and information transparency, why are more and more highly educated families falling into the trap of "the harder the parents try, the more the children break down"?

Co-authored by Joyce Zhao and her 16-year-old son, Joshua, this book offers a dual perspective from mother and son. It provides a raw, authentic account of a Twice-Exceptional (2E) family’s journey from conflict and misunderstanding to deep connection and healing. Moving from Singapore to Silicon Valley, they gradually came to realize a profound truth: many parents try to use conventional standards to "fix" their children's differences, completely overlooking that the very traits labeled as "problems" are often inextricably linked to the child's innate talent, sensitivity, and creativity.

Throughout the book, Joshua shares the raw, unfiltered feelings and observations of a teenager, offering vital insights and perspectives. Meanwhile, Joyce honestly reflects on her own path as a mother—confronting her past anxiety, need for control, and ultimate awakening.

Featuring "fireside chats" with global experts—including Dr. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng, Professor Emerita at San Diego State University—and rooted in their firsthand experiences across Singapore and the United States, this book systematically compiles a wealth of practical resources and insights on supporting 2E and neurodivergent individuals.

This is more than just a book about education; it is a profound dialogue about understanding, acceptance, and connection. True love is not about fixing a child, but truly seeing them.

EARLY PRAISES

Dr Lilly Cheng

"Keenly aware that research on twice-exceptionality (2E) within Chinese society is still in its infancy—and that relevant Chinese-language literature remains extremely scarce, leaving many families in deep distress—Joyce Zhao and Joshua Li decided to share their journey of learning and discovery. Their goal is to help more families facing similar experiences find a tailored path for their children's growth and development, right at the intersection of talent and challenge. It is also the hope of this book that parents everywhere find inner peace and composure, cultivating greater compassionate wisdom and boundless love as they open the doors and build the bridges of communication." — Professor Li-Rong Lilly Cheng, San Diego State University

Lawrence Fung MD PhD

"This book brings together authentic stories from diverse familial and professional perspectives, profoundly capturing the unique lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals as they navigate challenges and harness their strengths. Writing with warmth and insight, the two authors not only dismantle stereotypes surrounding 'differences,' but also invite readers to re-examine the profound meaning of growth, potential, and human diversity. For parents, educators, and medical or clinical professionals alike, this is both an inspiring masterpiece and an incredibly practical resource." — Lawrence Fung, MD, PhD, Associate Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine
